Configuration Management Database (CMDB) technology is recognized today as the solution for providing the master view of the critical hardware, software and networks on which business and IT services depend. It’s also become clear that the CMDB is not a "one size fits all" solution. A comprehensive view requires transparent access to multiple CMDBs.
The term "Federation" has emerged as a buzzword in the discussion of CMDBs. It provides the foundation for a flexible, scalable CMDB that can access critical configuration information from wherever it resides, regardless of the underlying data source.
Industry analysts and others have identified Federation as a "Must Have" for a successful CMDB implementation. The concept of Federation is at the hub of the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) initiatives; the ITIL V3 definition of a Configuration Management System is unachievable without it.
